In anticipation of its inaugural fall semester, Luther Classical College is excited to announce that every classroom on its Beech Street Campus has been furnished with a piano. These instruments, generously donated by supporters of LCC, will foster the daily musical enrichment of student life. “Music is an inseparable part of our mission,” remarks Dr. William Lipke, professor of music and parish music program coordinator. “Every student will attend daily chapel services and experience music in the classroom. The great Lutheran hymns and liturgy will be encountered throughout the curriculum.”
In keeping with the classical Lutheran model, music will be integrated into both campus worship and across academic disciplines. As part of the parish music program, students will have the opportunity to sing in the choir, play in the orchestra, and take private lessons in organ, piano, voice, and other instruments. When not in use for instruction, some of the pianos will be available for students to practice.
Hymnody and liturgics, music theory, and music history classes will make frequent use of classroom pianos. Their impact also will extend beyond the parish music program. “Like theology, music belongs not just to the chapel but also to the classroom and home,” says Rev. Joshua Hayes, dean of chapel. As part of LCC’s curriculum, students in all tracks, including the pre-seminary, teacher certification, and trade partnership programs, will encounter the rich heritage of Lutheran music in their studies. Students will explore the hymns of Paul Gerhardt, Martin Luther, and other great Lutheran hymnwriters, as well as the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Friedrich Händel, and other composers who shaped the musical and theological legacy of the Church.
From daily chapel and divine services to classes and community events, the sound of historic Lutheran music will resonate through the halls of the college, shaping the lives of its students. Prospective students who wish to learn more about how LCC can enrich their musical education are encouraged to fill out a pre-admission form at lutherclassical.org/pre-admission.
