Luther Classical College (LCC) has received the first shipment of custom hardwood furniture from a generous donor. The donor, who has requested to remain anonymous, is providing for all the college’s furniture needs, including bookshelves for the library, chairs for classrooms and student housing, bed frames, desks, and tables. “This gift has been more than a year in the making, and we are delighted to begin incorporating these beautiful pieces into our learning and living spaces,” reflected Mr. Asa Hoffman, director of advancement at the college.
Crafted from European beech, the furniture now enhances the campus environment. This wood, prized for its durability, fine grain, and warm color, has long been used in traditional European craftsmanship. On LCC’s campus these pieces serve as reminders of the birthplace of the Reformation and the Western heritage in which the curriculum is firmly rooted. “This gift is great for our students,” remarked Dr. Caleb Karges, dean of students. “It has been wonderful to see students already making use of this high-quality furniture. Whether studying in the library or gathering in common areas, they are enjoying spaces that are not only more comfortable but also more fitting of LCC’s style.”
Much of the furniture has been used to furnish Otto House, LCC’s first on-campus student house. Completed in August 2025, it is now home to the college’s male students. Wartburg Library, which houses a growing collection of over 7,000 books for student reference and pleasure, has enjoyed a massive facelift with the arrival of high-quality bookshelves. “It is tremendously gratifying to see books on shelves at last,” says LCC’s librarian, Mr. William Gottwalt. “The finely crafted furniture and shelving we have received will help make Wartburg Library a warm and inviting space where students and faculty can study God’s Word and the great works of Western civilization for years to come.”
A full campus is essential for a residential college, gifts like this not only enhance student life but also support LCC’s broader mission of building a Lutheran campus in accordance with its third institutional objective: “To instill in the rising generation of Lutherans the priority of Christian marriage, family, and piety, through instruction in the doctrine of vocation and the virtuous examples of faculty, staff, and administrators.”
