About halfway through the historic first semester of classes at Luther Classical College (LCC), a survey has revealed what the 38 pioneering students appreciate most about their college experience.
The most common response emphasized their appreciation for having chapel twice daily: matins at 9:30 a.m. and vespers at 4 p.m. every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. “Having matins, vespers, and praying in class,” wrote one student who was prompted simply to indicate what is best about the LCC experience. This sentiment was echoed by a classmate’s comment: “I very much appreciate matins and vespers every day.” The chorus of Christian voices continues from one survey response to the next. Students also expressed gratitude for divine service, which is held in the campus’s Löhe Chapel on Wednesday morning.
A second popular response pointed to the remainder of the Wednesday schedule: no regular classes are held. Rather, the middle of each week is reserved for music ensemble practices, individual music lessons, homework, and social time. “I think having a study day in the middle of the week is extremely beneficial,” commented one student. “It gives us time for our brains to relax.”
Also ranking among the three most common responses, students are amazed at how well their courses are integrated. The first semester core courses include theology, Latin, history, literature, philosophy, and rhetoric. “The commonplace notebooks and mutual themes between classes are helpful and it’s cool to see how everything fits together,” reflected one student.
If there is one complaint that stands out in the survey results, it is the challenging reading load. Success at LCC requires commitment, but this happens within a nurturing Christian community. Students are discovering that being stretched is part of growing, and with increased commitment comes maturity of character. “Everyone has been so welcoming,” expressed one respondent. “All the professors are very helpful and caring.”
